When you are planning your trip to Thailand, one important consideration is the weather. Thailand has a well deserved reputation for wonderful warm weather most of the year, but there is a definite rainy season. So before you book your trip, think about what your expectations are. If you’d like to spend your entire vacation sunbathing and swimming in balmy waters, the rainy season is not the right time for you to visit Thailand. On the other hand, if saving money is a priority, you can have a great time and get good deals on hotels when the country is enjoying a few rain showers.
Thailand's climate is typically warm and humid for the better part of the year. There are three seasons in the area north of Bangkok, but the south has only two.
Northern Thailand
In the north of Thailand the seasons are a bit more distinct. From November to May the weather is generally dry, but this dry season can be divided into two periods. In the spring, from March to May, the temperature is higher, while from November to March there can be chilly winds caused by the northeast monsoon, although without actual rainfall. From May to November is the time of the rainy season in the north, under the influence of the southwest monsoon.
Southern Thailand
The south of Thailand experiences only two seasons – the rainy season and the dry season. However, the periods of heaviest rain vary according to which coast you are on. On the west coast bordering the Andaman Sea, where the popular tourist destinations of Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi are situated, between April and October there are frequent storms and heavy rainfall. However, October to December is the rainiest time on the east coast, next to the Gulf of Thailand, the location of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
During the rainy season, you can of course expect heavy rainfalls. However, they usually last just a short time, meaning that you can enjoy a vacation even at this time of year. The number of tourists actually does not vary as much as you would expect from one season to another.
