Attractions and Culture Phuket

Phuket, one of Thailand’s south western provinces and its largest island, sits in the Andaman Sea. Two bridges join this magnificent island to the Thai mainland. The area suffered severe damage in the 2004 tsunami, but has since been rebuilt and reestablished as a vacation Paradise. Phuket is known for the large number of fascinating attractions and activities it has to offer tourists of every age, budget and range of interests.

Nature

Phuket offers travelers a glimpse of stunningly beautiful natural surroundings. Besides its many justly famous beaches, Phuket is home to the Khao Phra Thaeo wildlife park, with its Wildlife Conservation Development and Extension Centre, established for the protection and promotion of local wildlife. For another view of the local fauna, book a wildlife spotting safari. Or make your way up the View Point between the beaches of Kata and Nan Hai for a spectacular view; don’t forget to bring along your camera.

Cultural Attractions

he Two Heroines Monument in Amphoe Thalang honors the memory of two national heroines – sisters Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon, who met their death while defending Phuket against Burmese invasion. The nearby Thalang National Museum is also worth a visit for an overview of Phuket’s history. Atop a mountain peak just outside of Phuket’s capital sits a monumental pure white marble statue, the Big Buddha. Phuket is also dotted with Buddhist temples, which are generally open to visitors. Old Phuket Town has preserved examples of historical architecture and is a great place to explore.
