Located near hugely popular tourist islands such as Koh Samui and Ko Phangan, Koh Tao may be smaller, yet has exactly the same things on offer—and possibly even more. It is just as tropically perfect as its bigger neighbors. Koh Tao also has a lively ambience, jungle-covered hills, spectacular beaches and, probably the island’s most attractive feature, some of the best diving in all Thailand.

Diving is what attracts many people to Koh Tao in the first place for it is possible to just wade into the ocean and start diving and snorkeling in spectacular coral reefs. In contrary to most other islands in Thailand, Koh Tao isn’t focused on backpackers, which creates a totally different scene and feel. Instead, Koh Tao focuses on diving tourists, families and sports enthusiasts and the accommodation types reflect this.

The island’s most developed areas are on its west coast—this is where the three towns of Chalok Ban Kao, Mae Haad and Haad Sairee are located. People who are up for parties and other evening entertainment couldn’t find a better place to stay than Haad Sairee with it bucket parties, fire shows and beach dancing. You will find plenty of long-term house and bungalow rentals in these areas. Bungalow complexes are found along the beaches, set amid lush green gardens, or more inland. Usually they have daily as well as monthly rates—the latter one is much cheaper (per day) and makes it pretty affordable to spend several weeks on end on the island.

If you’re not in the mood for partying, but rather want a relaxing and quite getaway, you might want to stay at Chalok Bay with its more laidback and open environment compared to the west coast towns. The east coast of the island is the place to be for peace and quiet—there is no nightlife whatsoever and things to do include lying in hammocks, swimming and reading. Be aware, though, that the road there is bumpy and taxi rides rather expensive.
