Ko Kho Khao – About Ko Kho Khao in Thailand

Ko Kho Khao is a quiet and idyllic island in Thailand’s Phang Nga province. It lies very close to the mainland—the ferry ride from the boat landing just south of the town of Takua Pa doesn’t take longer than ten minutes. Ko Kho Khao, because of its proximity to the mainland, doesn’t differ much in terms of appearance and mentality. It is, however, much quieter and less-crowded.

People looking for a family-friendly beach destination are advised to consider staying on Koh Kho Khao, rather than other nearby towns such as Khao Lak and Phuket, which are much busier.

The island of Kho Khao (koh means island in Thai) is characterized by flat featureless sand flats covered with grass in the middle, expansive coastal mangroves and natural canals on the east coast, and stunning beaches on its north and west coasts. It is these endless beaches on the west coast that draw in most visitors—and the sunsets are downright spectacular as well.

Attractions and Activities

Koh Kho Khao is home to huge numbers of wildlife, including sea turtles. These turtles nest on the beaches between November and February and are a major attraction. Nature-lovers will be thrilled to have the chance to observe nesting turtles in their natural habitats. Other attractions on the island are the beautiful Toan Thong Waterfall, temples and picturesque fishing villages.

Popular activities include hiking, sea kayaking in the mangroves, wildlife watching,  swimming, romantic sunset walks on the beach, snorkeling and diving.

Getting around on Koh Kho Khao is easy. There is only one main road from the boat landing in Baan Pak Koh to the north coast—everything is located on side roads off this main road.

Where to Sleep

There are plenty of options when it comes to accommodation. Like in many beach destinations in Thailand, the high-end resorts are present. However, budget accommodations are numerous as well and range from guesthouses to cottages and bungalows.
