Events, festivals and holidays in Isaan
Songkran Water Festival (Thai New Year) starts 13 April and lasts a few days, sometimes longer. Songkran is the famous festival which sprays water on everyone, from young to old and even police officers. It is celebrated all over Thailand and also of course around Isaans all cities and villages. Especially transport and accommodation can be busy this week, so book and plan your holiday in advance.
Loy Krathong is the beautiful and famous festival of light candles and beautiful small hot air balloons rising into the sky. Small fine floral boats with candles and incense are placed in the water (Krathong). Loy Krathong is not an official holiday, but still a very busy period, especially around Thailand and of Isaan., Usually only for one night. Transportation and hotel must be booked in advance.
