Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s major highlights and is nicknamed “the Rose of the North”. It is the fifth largest city in Thailand and is a hugely popular place among expats, backpackers and foodies. Set amid lush green surroundings and in between beautiful mountains, this city offers both an escape to nature, a superb food scene and a vibrant culture.
As such a popular tourist destination, it can come as no surprise that accommodations in Chiang Mai are numerous. In fact, there are more than 250 hotels in the city you can choose from—that is in addiction to dozens and dozens of other accommodations such as guesthouses and bed and breakfasts, as well as long-term house and apartment rentals. Generally speaking, all accommodations in Chiang Mai, with the exception of luxury resorts, are quite affordable. But even those luxury resorts aren’t all too expensive compared to similar resorts in other cities and countries around the world.
Long-term rentals are by far the cheapest way to accommodate yourself in Chiang Mai, and in the rest of Thailand, for that matter. Although budget guesthouses and hostels are very affordable as well, houses and apartments allow for much more privacy. And the fact that you can cook your own food is a money-saver as well.
Many of the best long-term apartments and houses are found in Chiang Mai’s northwest and surrounding Chiang Mai University, but there are some in other area in the city as well.. When looking for a place to stay in Chiang Mai, make sure to compare electricity costs. Usually, apartment and houses are very well-equipped and come with air-conditioning, TV, refrigerator, parking, windows and oftentimes also Wi-Fi, which may be charged separately.
Chiang Mai deserves exploring and staying for a longer period of time is always a good choice. There is a huge expat and backpacker population as it is, which shows how great a city it is for long-term stays.
